Instructor: Mrs. Karen Moore
MY TRAINING
I began taking piano lessons at the age of two. Living in California at the time, my mother drove two hours every Saturday morning from Huntington Beach to San Diego to take me to lessons. I began instruction with Mrs. Ruth Alling, founder of the Lo Kno Pla piano method (Love, Know, and Play music). I am a firm believer that the earlier a child begins piano the better, as long as they have the interest and attention span. At the age of five, I began studying with Mrs. Mary Jean Brown who trained me in classical music, congregational hymn playing, and hymn improvisation. My mother was a wonderful pianist and encouraged me in my study of the piano. At the age of 12 and on through my high school years, I studied with Mr. Gene Robison who instructed me in classical music, music theory, chord progressions, and hymn arranging. While studying at Liberty University, I studied under Dr. David Ehrman. I graduated from Liberty University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education with a concentration in Piano.
MY EXPERIENCE
Being raised as the daughter of a minister, I began playing for church services at the age of 10. Throughout my high school years, I provided special music for a local Christian television station, as well as revival meetings and youth camps. My love for music and God's hand on my life led me to Liberty University, where I received a full music scholarship for being selected to sing with Youth Aflame, a high school assembly team, traveling all across the United States and overseas to Korea. There were also many opportunities to serve as a piano accompanist for various soloists and ensembles while studying at the university. I have taught piano since 1981. In addition, I have taught music in public and private schools, pre-school-12th grades. Teaching experience in schools has included general music, choral groups of all ages, elementary and junior high handbell choirs, as well as directing music productions. While homeschooling my own children, I continued teaching private piano lessons out of my home. I have directed the Joyful Praise Homeschool Choir for 22 years. I love music and believe music is an integral part of the education of a child, as it will help a student develop in other areas. Music is a gift from God, and a wonderful tool for ministry.
LESSON GUIDELINES AND CONTACT INFORMATION
Lessons are 1/2 hour taught on a weekly basis - $20.00 per lesson. The student is given weekly assignments, and is expected to keep up with daily practice to progress in their ability (30 minutes for beginning students and 45 minutes to one hour for intermediate to advanced - one free day a week). I do not use any certain method exclusively. The student is asked to bring any books or music from previous instruction. We will begin with those, then add books as necessary.
There is a full charge for failure to call for cancellation of a lesson. Prior notice of sickness or other family situation will allow you to be credited a lesson the following month. Failure to practice is not a valid excuse for missing a lesson. If the teacher cancels a lessons, you will be credited the following month. One-month notice will be appreciated if you wish to terminate lessons. Consistent failure to practice or missing lessons, especially without notice, will result in termination by the teacher. Your consistent practice and attendance to lessons will result in great progress! If you are interested in lessons, I would be glad to set an appointment for an interview.
